Anophthalmia or microphthalmia can be a scary and stressful diagnosis for parents, and the process can feel strange for the child. We create prosthetics for our young patients as soon as possible, helping little ones look their best and feel as normal as possible.

What is Anophthalmia?

Anophthalmia is a birth defect of a baby’s eye or eyes. Babies who experience anophthalmia are born without one or both eyes. It can occur alone, with other birth defects, or as part of a syndrome.

What is Microphthalmia?

Microphthalmia is a birth defect that causes a baby’s eye or eyes to be abnormally small. In some cases, enucleation surgery is recommended. If surgery isn’t recommended, you’ll likely be referred to an ocularist for one or more prosthetics.

Anophthalmia and Microphthalmia Ocular Prosthetics

We specialize in fabricating and fitting ocular prosthetics for anophthalmia and microphthalmia. Our team has over 40 years’ experience in the specialized fabrication and fitting techniques needed to create these special prosthetics that your child can grow into.

In some cases, we use progressive expanding conformers to enlarge the eye socket to allow for ideal retention of prosthetic eyes. Before every procedure, we inform you of the process involved and the results you can expect. We find that open communication helps assuage fears and ensure a stress-free process for everyone involved.
