"Our son with was born with a rare condition called unilateral microphthalmia. His left eye did not fully develop in utero, leaving him without vision in his left in addition to having a significantly smaller eye than his right. After a healthy pregnancy with no signs or indication that this was the case, we, as parents, were shocked and scared. After a view bad experience with an ocularfacial plastic surgeon in our area, we were referred to Dr. Nunery in Indianapolis when our son was one month old. During our visit with Dr. Nunery, he suggested that we consider Kathy Hetzler as our ocularist. He called her during our appt with him and asked her if she could fit us into her schedule that day as we were in from out of town. Not only did she fit us in, but she met with us for almost 2 hours and talked us through everything regarding our son's condition, how she could help, how she and our ocularfacial plastic surgeon would work together, and what we should expect for the next 3 months, 6 months, year, 5 years, life of our son. All of that, for no charge. Her office walls are covered with pictures of children and adults with whom she has worked over her extensive career. The smiles on their faces tell it all. Our son is now almost 6 months old and is on his 3rd conformer. When he was born, his left eye would not/could not open as there was not enough volume to support the eyelids. Now, on his third conformer, his left eye is now almost the same size as his right eye. We drive five hours to Indianapolis to see our team of Dr. Nunery and Kathy Hetzler once every 1-2 months. The drive is absolutely worth it and I would recommend Hetzler Ocular Plastics to anyone, especially to parents of young children. Our son will be fitted with his first prosthetic eye within the next few months and I am confident that it will be the best prosthesis possible."
